Education and Career Development

PROJECT LEARN

Our goal is to support and enhance the efforts of teachers counselors to ensure academic achievement and instill a desire for life long learning. PROJECT LEARN is an innovative program that increases learning skills and academic achievement by engaging youngsters in interesting and fun high-yield learning activities during non-school hours. PROJECT LEARN activities include:

Focused homework help and tutoring
Learning Activities in all program areas at the Club
Parent and adult involvement
Collaboration with schools
Incentives and Accountability

Computers in our Learning Center offer youngsters the chance to sharpen their skills and to complete homework assignments.

Scholarships to College of the Canyons are awarded to selected Club members annually.

PROJECT LEARN is funded through the by GG Industries through the Margo Groger Education Fund, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, and the Kathryne Beynon Foundation

The Arts

Through a dynamic partnership with California Institute of the Arts, the SCVCAP program offers Club teens unique opportunities for top-notch instruction in a variety of artist disciplines.

Our award winning Photography program, under the leadership of CalArts’ Provost John Bach, has routinely produced national winners in Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Photography Contest for the past seven years.

In the Digital Arts Lab at our Central Facility, Club teens receive college level training in digital arts including animation, production and communication media while introducing them to possibilities for future careers. Club members are networked with eleven other sites so they can share ideas, educational experiences and artwork with young people throughout Los Angles County with real-time, two-way video conferencing. International video conferencing following September 11, 2001 enabled our teens to connect with their peers across America and in the Mid-East.

Express Yourself, under the tutelage of Dennis Woods, our members learn from a real pro who has coached Will Smith and other notable actors.

Our annual Fine Arts Contest and Talent Show encourage creativity and artist expression while everyday art projects with clay, paints and wood give young people many avenues for personal expression.

Character and Leadership Development

Our Keystone Club gives Club young people form 14-17 years of age an opportunity to develop leadership skills and the value of community service, as they design and implement projects and activities that help them grow personally. Our local teens have received national recognition for community service and leadership. Their signature event is the annual Haunted Jailhouse, staged at our local Sheriff's Station. This community-wide event attracts over 5,000 people and provides a safe, fun Halloween experience for Santa Clarita families. Regional and National Keystone Conferences broaden horizons and help develop young leaders.

For younger members, the Torch Club offers a stepping-stone to leadership with positive role models and special speakers addressing issues pertinent to pre-teens.

Sports, Recreation and Fitness

The club sponsors leagues in basketball, softball, soccer, arena hockey, flag football and other sports with an emphasis on teamwork, fair play and effort. An all-star “traveling team” is selected each year from our three sites to represent Santa Clarita in competition against other Boys & Girls Clubs.

Other activities include volleyball, whiffle ball, radical relays and “Girls Only Flag Football”. Activities in our games room area include the annual Pinewood Derby, daily ping-pong, pool, air hockey and foosball. Special tournaments for all age and skill levels are conducted.

Health and Life Skills

SMART GIRLS and SMART BOYS groups address critical health and lifestyle issues with an emphasis on avoiding drugs, alcohol, tobacco and teen pregnancy. Discussions on responsible conflict resolution, healthy dietary choices, handling peer pressure and cooking classes help prepare young people for healthy, productive lives as adults.

Informal counseling sessions occur as needed and referrals are made in circumstances when specialized counseling is needed.
