Public Transit Used as Canvas for Photo Exhibition
October 15, 2002
CalArts Community Arts Partnership and Santa Clarita Valley Boys and Girls Club Photography program are thrilled to take you on a ride through Santa Clarita, where public transit is employed as a medium for expression. On Dec. 7, all are invited to take a tour of a city-wide bus shelter exhibition of original photographic works by high school student participants. The program is directed by CalArts Associate Provost John Bache, with CalArts School of Art faculty Shelley Stepp, Kary Arimoto-Mercer, Andy Freeman, and CalArts School of Art alumna Rachel Slowinski, along with CalArts School of Art students. The bus tour will begin at 1:30 pm at CalArts.
"Not only does [the exhibition] provide these young artists with the chance to be recognized," says Slowinski, "but it also challenges the convention of art's relationship to public space."
The photographs, all taken by youth participants in the Santa Clarita Valley Arts Partnership (SCVAP) Photography program, were enlarged to full poster size (4' x 6') and laminated. They will be displayed in several bus stop shelters at well-traveled intersections located throughout the Santa Clarita Valley. The exhibition will run from November 18 to December 18, 2002. Anyone interested in the tour is encouraged to come early, since the bus will depart promptly at 1:30 pm. Parking at CalArts is free. For more information regarding the tour call Marlo Hampton Roth at (661) 222-2710.
